UPDATED — Wink Hartman Sr. has decided on plans for his former Bella Donna restaurant space.
In July, Hartman told Have You Heard? he was working on a new concept for the space, which sits back from Webb Road just south of 21st Street.
He’s opening the Lake Side Club, a $20-a-month private club that will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week.
Sort of like the long-standing Candle Club near 13th and Woodlawn?
“Well, I don’t like to look at it that way,” Hartman says.
“It’s a country club atmosphere that doesn’t include a pool, tennis or golf.”
Why do it?
“Because I own a building. I need to put it into productivity.”
Why private, though?
“There’s such a need for people in the midrange, say, 35, 45, those types of people.”
Hartman says people in that age group may be married couples who don’t have the time or money for golfing at a country club.
“But they would still like to have an environment where they’re somewhat exclusive, where they’ll see their friends.”
Jeremy Wade is the executive chef.
Hartman is remodeling the space and creating a room that can be used for private parties or, when not in use, a place for members to watch sporting events or anything else on three large-screen TVs.
Hartman is still firming up details, but he’ll likely offer live music on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a DJ on Fridays and karaoke on Thursdays.
“I can’t sing so I’m not into that, but a lot of people really enjoy that.”
Hartman is negotiating with musician Matt Johnston — formerly the house musician at the Candle Club — to be a regular at the Lake Side.
There will be club rules regarding things such as attire.
“There will be some standards when you sign up for your contract,” Hartman says. “What we’re trying to avoid is you coming in with a shirt that says, ‘I was at the so-and-so concert Friday night.’ ”
Otherwise, anyone will be welcome for the $20 a month. There’s no joining fee, and membership is month-to-month.
Hartman expects to open in January.
“I’m going to go slow and easy and make sure it’s done right.”
